Curator’s Talk - Photographs from 1950s
The Social Subcommittee held an online curator's talk "Photographs from 1950s: Majorie Doggett's Singapore, Lee Fook Chee's Hong Kong" on 30th June 2021. Alumnae joined our speaker, photographic historian and photographer Mr. Edward Stokes, as they travelled back in time to view photographs of landmarks in Hong Kong and Singapore in the 1950s. Mr. Stokes studied at Oxford University and is the founder and publisher of The Photographic Heritage Foundation. His passion is in presenting Asian photographs taken in the mid-twentieth century, with texts that reflect the photographer's life and the social history during that time. Attendees saw images such as Des Voeux Road, Central District, Hennessey Road, Fullerton Building and the characteristic go-downs along The Singapore River. It was an interesting session viewing the similarities and differences in culture and history of the two cities through the lenses of Majorie Doggett and Lee Fook Chee.
